Throughout your career (though not often), you’ll encounter PIs who leave the organization. When that happens, there are numerous steps to follow and depending on your organization, you might have a very tight process, where everything runs smoothly with checklists and clear responsibilities. But in other places, you might find yourself creating the process from scratch each time.
The first question is: How involved do you need to be?
In some organizations, you might be the only one who knows all the pieces. Without a clear process, you’ll need to corral and herd cats to get everything done—flying blind. In that case, this video and checklist will be your godsend(you’re welcome).
that said, if you’re not very involved or already have a process, this video will give you a bird’s eye view of lab closeouts to help get you acclimated, but it will be your first step of many supported by your organizational documentation and processes. You’ll learn what you need to know for your job and understand how the whole process plays out. Then, your organization can guide you through the rest.
I recommend watching the video and downloading the cheat sheet for detailed guidance. Always check with your manager for the actual method your organization follows.
